Chair of Trustees.

Thank you very much for your interest in the role of Chair of Trustees at Embassy.

Below are the details of the role and the selection process, to assist you in considering and completing your application.

Introduction to Embassy.

Embassy is a Greater Manchester-based charity that helps people break the cycle of homelessness by providing a home, skills, training and wrap-around support.  Embassy is a Christian charity, and we believe the good news of Jesus is good news for all.  This is included in our constitution.

There is more information about Embassy on our website: our history, our projects, our staff team and our ambitions.   A few specific points of note:

  • Embassy is a small charity currently undergoing rapid growth and substantial change.

  • A large build project is approaching completion at our site in Castlefield, Manchester, where Embassy is building 40 new homes for male residents who would otherwise be homeless.  This is a high-profile project, attracting interest, excitement and generosity from civic leaders, business owners, the media and the general public.

  • Embassy has other properties in Greater Manchester, including another new-build property for women due to open soon.

  • Embassy is midway through an application process to become a registered provider and is aiming to receive approval for this status from the regulator in the coming months.

  • In the forthcoming year, it is vital for Embassy to open and operate the village excellently, and to embed good processes and cultures expected of a registered provider.

Commitment.

We typically hold six full Trustee meetings each year.  These are mostly held online and last approximately two hours.  In addition, the chair is expected to appraise the CEO, and to be appraised themselves by 2-3 other trustees.  Embassy has recently begun to use sub-groups for specific issues to improve our governance and efficiency as a board, whilst recognising trustees are all volunteers.  This is new so the structure or frequency of these will potentially evolve.

Please note: Embassy is a small organisation undergoing transition, and the chair role requires additional effort over and above the regular meetings.

Terms.

The appointment will initially be for one year, at which point a discussion will take place between the Trustees and successful candidate as to the mutual appetite to continue for an additional two years.  The term is then capable of renewal for a further three-year term thereafter.

Remuneration.

The position is voluntary.

To apply, please provide the following:

  • Two referees who Embassy can contact for references – one professional and one character.
